Derek Sakaguchi
CHAIRMAN
Native Hawaiian Community Development Corp
My professional journey is dedicated to empowering Native Hawaiian small businesses by facilitating their entry into federal contracting through the SBA NHO 8(a) program. My goal is to foster economic growth and create generational wealth for Native Hawaiian communities, ensuring a prosperous future for our keiki.
Professional Experience and Contributions:
I have been intricately involved with the SBA 8(a) program for nearly a quarter of a century, both as one of its pioneers and as a foundational member of the Native Hawaiian Organizations Association. My experience spans the creation of nine for-profit entities, with five actively participating in the 8(a) program. This initiative not only boosts our economic footprint but also strengthens the community's entrepreneurial spirit. I spearheaded the establishment of the first Professional Employers Organization (PEO) within the NHO landscape, sanctioned by the SBA. This organization is pivotal in managing the comprehensive back-office functions for all affiliated companies, enhancing operational efficiency and allowing entrepreneurs to focus on growth and innovation. Beyond these accomplishments, I have guided numerous other businesses and individuals through the intricate processes of obtaining certifications in diverse sectors such as 8(a), HUBZone, Women-Owned, Veteran-Owned, and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned programs. My efforts extend to the formation and IRS certification of various 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, aimed at fostering community service and development.
Hobbies and Personal Life:
I am an avid cook, specializing in a variety of ethnic cuisines, which reflects my deep appreciation for cultural diversity and heritage. My frequent travels to Japan enrich my understanding and connection to its culture, which I share with my beloved wife of nearly 48 years, our three children, and ten grandchildren. My commitment to Hawaiian culture is also expressed through over 30 years of leadership in a Hula Halau, promoting the traditional dance and music that are integral to our Kānaka Maoli.
Skills and Future Endeavors:
My deep-rooted expertise in SBA programs, particularly the NHO 8(a) program, is a cornerstone of my professional skill set. This knowledge has empowered me to organize impactful entities, including the non-profit Derek Sakaguchi Foundation and the innovative NHO 8(a) Academy, set to launch in 2025. These initiatives are designed not only to support current business needs but to lay a foundation for sustainable, long-term community success. Through these endeavors, I remain committed to advancing the interests of Native Hawaiian businesses and contributing to the economic resilience and cultural richness of our community.
